Causes of Lymphedema

Primary lymphedema is usually genetic, inherited, and may present at birth or later in life.

Secondary lymphedema is caused by any condition that damages your lymphatic vessels or lymph nodes.  This can include cancer, cancer treatments, infection, or surgery.  Cancer may block the lymphatic vessels or lymph nodes.  Radiation therapy can cause fibrosis of your lymphatic vessels or lymph nodes.  Lymph nodes can also be damaged by bacteria or parasites, which causes lymphatic obstruction.  During surgery, lymph nodes and lymph vessels may be removed or damaged resulting in lymphedema.

Currently there is no known cure of lymphedema, however the Integrative Lymphedema Institute can help you manage your lymphedema.  These treatments can be either surgical or non-surgical, depending on the severity of the disease.  We have provided resources here for you to review your options and help you manage your lymphedema.  Contact us to discuss your options.
